The Design Process
The design for Julia’s dining room was anchored around a 1890s dining set and sideboard that she had inherited from her great grandmother, two pieces that had once lived in her childhood home and that she cherished deeply. Whitney’s challenge was to honor the pieces’ history while thoughtfully modernizing both the furniture and the room to align with the broader design aesthetic of her client’s home.

Meet Whitney McNell
Whitney McNell founded her eponymous, full-service design firm in 2021 following 16 years refining her aesthetic and expertise through roles in interior design and high fashion. Whitney’s signature is a skillful blend of eye-catching color, pattern and texture, and a well-curated alchemy of traditional and modern elements—always with a twist of elevated whimsy. A native of Nantucket who first fell for classic architecture on the island, Whitney lives with her family in Darien, Connecticut, where she is lovingly restoring her 1870s farmhouse.
