How to Measure Your Walls for Wallpaper

Height: Measure from floor to ceiling in feet, no need to include baseboards in your measurement but do include doors & windows.

    • Minimum: 1 ft

    • Maximum: 12 ft for DIY wallpapers (Peel & Stick, Pre-Pasted)

    • Up to 27 ft for Commercial wallpapers

Width: Measure the width of each wall in feet and add them together.

    • Add as many wall widths as you need.

    • At least one wall width is required.

    • Add 10% extra for safety/overage (optional).

Pro Tip: Always measure in multiple spots and use the largest height and width for accuracy.

How many rolls of wallpaper do I need

Spoonflower wallpaper comes in standard roll lengths:

    • DIY wallpapers (Peel & Stick, Pre-Pasted): 1 ft (sample), 3 ft, 6 ft, 9 ft, 12 ft

    • Commercial wallpapers: 1 ft (sample), 3 ft, 6 ft, 9 ft, 12 ft, plus an additional 27 ft

    How it works:

    • Take your wall height.

    • Round up to the nearest available roll length.

      • Example: Wall height = 8.5 ft → 9 ft roll.

      • Example: Wall height = 4 ft → 6 ft roll.

How to measure for wallpaper with a repeat

Some wallpaper designs include repeats that affect the calculation:

    • Straight repeat: No extra adjustment needed.

    • Half-drop repeat (less than 24 inches wide): No extra adjustment needed.

    • Half-drop repeat (24 inches wide):

      • Divide vertical repeat in half → offset.

      • Add offset to wall height → round up to roll length.

    Example: Wall height = 6 ft; vertical repeat = 24 in → offset = 12 in (1 ft). Total = 7 ft → round up = 9 ft roll.

Our wallpaper calculator, linked on every wallpaper design page, automatically adjusts for half-drop repeats on designs that are 24 in wide.

Calculate Quantity (Number of Rolls or Panels)

Once you know your wall height and roll length, the next step is to figure out how many panels you’ll need to cover the total wall width.

    • Panel width = 24 inches (2 ft).

    • To find the quantity you'll need:

      • Sum all of your wall widths.

      • Divide by 2.

      • Round up to nearest whole number.

    Example: Total wall width = 23 ft → 23 ÷ 2 = 11.5 → 12 panels.
Adding an optional 10% overage, may increase the number of panels needed.

    FACTS

    FAQs About Wallpaper Calculations

    Short answer
Measure both height and width in feet, at multiple points, and use the largest measurement.

    Expanded

    • Height: Measure from floor to ceiling. Spoonflower's DIY wallpapers work up to 12 ft tall; Spoonflower's commercial wallpapers go up to 27 ft.

    • Width: Measure every wall you plan to cover and add the totals together.
Always measure in at least two or three spots since walls and ceilings can be uneven. Use the largest measurement per wall so you don’t come up short.

Spoonflower's wallpaper rolls are 24 inches wide and available in lengths of 1ft (sample), 3, 6, 9, and 12 feet (plus 27 feet for commercial substrates).

DIY wallpapers (Peel & Stick and Pre-Pasted) come in lengths up to 12 feet. Commercial wallpapers (Traditional, Vinyl, Grasscloth, Metallic) are also available in 27-foot lengths to cover taller spaces.

    Short Answer
It depends on the height and total width of your walls.

    For example
A 10 ft wide wall that is 8.5 ft tall would need six 9 ft panels (10 ÷ 2 = 5 panels, rounded up to account for any mistakes equals 6 panels). For larger rooms, use the calculator, available on every wallpaper design page across Spoonflower.com it accounts for exact dimensions and design repeats.

    Short answer
It’s a pattern that shifts horizontally by half the vertical repeat.

    Expanded
With half-drop repeats, each row of wallpaper is offset from the one next to it, which requires more careful alignment. To calculate: divide the vertical repeat by 2 to find the offset, add that to your wall height, and round up to the nearest roll length. The calculator, available on every wallpaper design page across Spoonflower.com will do this for you automatically.

    Short answer
Measure the wall as if it’s a full rectangle.

    Expanded
For accuracy, measure the full width and height first. Including all windows or doors. For small cutouts or trim, it’s usually better to order the full rolls needed and trim down.

    Short answer
You can use extra wallpaper for DIY projects.

    Expanded
Leftover wallpaper works great for accenting furniture, drawer liners, stair risers, art projects, or smaller walls. Many people intentionally order extra to account for mistakes, handle trimming above or below windows or to match an accent to their walls.
