What is The Whimsy Dog?
The Whimsy Dog is my small business specializing in handmade dog accessories. Every design is inspired by my own dogs' personalities and my personal style — so the prints tend to be fun, intentional, and a little bit me. I sell primarily on Etsy and share the process (and a lot of dog content) on Instagram. It started as a way to combine two things I already loved — making things and my dogs — and it just grew from there. Each bandana is handcrafted, tie-on style, and made to make your pup look like the main character they absolutely are.What inspired you to start your small business?
My dogs are my main inspiration for my business! Their quirks and their playfulness fuel my creativity for the patterns and themes I want for the bandanas. I'm always thinking about what feels fresh and what dog owners would genuinely get excited to put on their pup. When it comes to choosing fabrics and prints, I look for things that feel intentional and special — prints that have personality and work beautifully at a small scale. I envision items that could add a bit of joy and fun to both everyday moments together, as well as special occasions and holidays.What are your favorite Spoonflower fabrics for your products?
I use Petal Signature Cotton for my bandanas! The print quality is incredible — the colors consistently come out vibrant and true, and the fabric itself is soft, lightweight, and easy to work with. My advice for someone wanting to start a handmade business: don’t settle, don’t cut corners, & don’t hold back on your ideas! And always stay true to you. Lean into what makes your work distinct and don't try to make something for everyone. The thing I didn't expect when I started The Whimsy Dog was the community that would grow around it. Dog people are genuinely the best people, and getting to connect with customers who love their dogs as much as I love mine has been the most rewarding part of all of it.
