What is The Love Mich Collection?

My nickname as a kid (and still with my family and friends!) is Mich, hence the "Love, Mich." I wanted the name to reflect making things with love from me to you! I officially began my business in 2008 making and selling all sorts of bags, purses and our now most popular product - coffee cozies! Over the last nearly two decades, our coffee cozies have taken over as the main star of Love Mich and we have sold them all over the United States and beyond.

What inspired you to start your small business?

I've always been a creative person. I just love COLORS! I taught myself to sew in my teens. I always knew I wanted a career in fashion but I didn't know how to get there. I figured if I could make things myself, that would be a start! I made purses and bags at first and gave them as gifts and eventually started selling at craft fairs. In the midst of creating, I earned my Bachelor's degree in Legal Studies and began working as a Paralegal. In all of my spare time, I was making and sewing things while daydreaming of owning my own company. While I enjoyed the legal field, I knew I needed a creative outlet. I created the original iced coffee cozy in 2008 out of a necessity for my sweating iced coffee. I added these to the things I was making and they became increasingly popular. I participated in many craft and vendor shows, opened an Etsy shop and eventually my own website, all with the goal of being able to make Love Mich my full time job. In 2016 with the increasing demand for our coffee cozies, I achieved that goal of becoming a full time entrepreneur and haven't looked back since! What started in the corner of our bedroom is now a studio space as well as a brick and mortar shop in my hometown!

What are your favorite Spoonflower fabrics for your products?

The Spoonflower fabric I mostly use is the Petal Signature Cotton.  If I'm making something that needs more structure, like a tote bag, I like the Cypress Cotton Canvas! I love the wide range of things I can make from the both fabrics, including our coffee cozies, book sleeves and a bunch of different style bags.

    Why Spoonflower?

I originally discovered Spoonflower many years ago when I was desperate for modern fabric designs. I loved shopping at places like Joann Fabrics but I wanted designs that we further up on the trends. I also wanted the ability to design my own fabric and have it printed. I did some googling and found Spoonflower! Spoonflower helps support my business by having such a wide range of designs available from artists all over the world. The ability to order just 1 yard or 100 yards is essential. I also love that I can order samples and see how something will print before committing to yardage. And, of course, being able to design my own fabric has been instrumental in the expansion of my business.

What’s your advice for someone starting a small business?

Just start! Oftentimes we get caught up in making things "perfect" or it being the "right time" but there is no such thing.  Accept that you will learn as you go and just take the leap. From a practical standpoint - focus on a few things you do well as opposed to trying to do all the things all at once! I love being included in special moments of people's lives through our products. I've heard so many stories from customers about designs that hold special meaning to them. Like when a first-time mama is getting a "Mama" Cozy and when a "Sunflower" Cozy is a reminder of a loved one who has passed on. Being intertwined into people's everyday lives is my favorite!
